What did the White Tornado advertise?

Ans: Ajax

No balls in Cricket

There are front foot and back foot no balls and a whole range of other things such as:
  • Throwing the ball rather than bowling
  • Beamers
  • Changing arms without notifying the umpire (who then notifies the striker).
  • Too many bouncers in the over (the number varies according to the type of match)
  • Bowling underarm (since 1982)

The full list is available from this link. Other interesting sidebars on this information include:

Brigantia Luxury DK Yarn

I'm in the midst of coming up with a pattern using this wool for fingerless mitts. I looked them up because I wondered about buying some wool and making up kits. Web presence wise they are a little tricky to find, but Brigantia with the same logo tracks back to people who make really rather nice looking tapestry and embroidered rug kits - Jacksons of Hebden Bridge are the parent company, the embroideries can be seen here.

Lots of shops sell the yarn online (and it is very nice, not as scratchy as a pure wool often is, problem is that I suspect that if you even think about water whilst knitting it it will felt), including Sheila's Wool Shop which is an ebay shop, the real life counterpart of which is about six miles away from us.

It takes between one and three months for a cat's fur to grow back if they are shaved.

Sheila Mercier

played Annie Sugden on Emmerdale Farm a farming based soap opera which is still running on ITV in the UK. Now it is called Emmerdale which I tend to feel should come with an exclamation mark. When it was actually about the farm it was quite good, then it got silly (a plane crashed on the village for pity's sake, far too close to real life I thought, somewhat tactless). What I actually looked up was when she was born (1919).

Ranks of Angels

I'm not sure why I wanted to know this, but here goes:

Angels come in three sets of three, from the top down:
  • Seraphim
  • Cherubim and
  • Thrones

Then

  • Dominions
  • Virtues and
  • Powers

Finally

  • Principalities
  • Archangels and
  • Angels

Obviously this is a very Christian view of things. I know that angels are traditionary in most of the religions of the book. This page talks about messenger and writing angels which is quite interesting. If I have given anyone offense by this posting, then it was unintentional and I apologise.

Learning Objectives

Question: What is a learning Objective

Since I lost my marbles, I've become much less confident about things I thought I knew. One of them it turns out is are my Learning Objectives OK. Now I really should not be worrying about this. I don't teach any more, I'm just admin now. But it turns out my old department members still are not planning their own lessons and here I am, last day of the holidays (actually I've been back a fortnight) planning lessons that I wont even get to teach. Any way answers to the question:

This page gives a very operational view of things, very much linked to an ICT training model, and given that this page says much the same thing, it must be standard possibly in the USA. But in the UK context I'm coming up empty.

So what shall I do? Go with my instincts - which were always good when it came to teaching, seems the most likely. I will take the following as my guides:
  • That they should represent something that the pupils did not know before the lesson and that they do know afterwards
  • They should in some part be assessable - so that the kids and the staff know whether they have accomplished something
  • They should give the kids some sort of framework

Since we got broadband...

...when I want to look something up I can do it then and there on the Internet. Often these are very silly things:
  • Does Ottery-St-Catchpole exist? (I know about Ottery-St-Mary incidentally) - No
  • Who will be in the new series of House - didn't find a complete answer to this
  • The Blacklist

and a whole host of others. On this blog, if I stick to it, I will post the answers
